We’re Rooting For Rootstock.

It would appear that Rootstock Sydney has firmly taken root as an event-goer favourite with preparations underway for it’s upcoming third year at Carriageworks.  Which goes to show that the event is as wonderfully sustainable and seasonal as the artisanal delights that will be on showcase.  Judging from years past, what you can expect is a two day celebration of all things natural, ethical, sustainable and, of course, consumable.  Be still our beating hearts.

What is it:  Rootstock Sydney is a unique, collaborative not-for-profit sustainable food and wine festival.  And we’re off to a good start.  It is a place where winemakers, grape growers, chefs, sommeliers, writers, artists, thinkers, and most importantly drinkers (that’s you… and that’s us) can all come together to share with one another.  Prepare yourself for a hearty serving of fun that’s informative, a touch wild, with a focus on organic, biodynamic and natural growing and the beautiful produce that results.   You’ll find yourself presented with the unique opportunity to both meet the artisan winemakers and taste their natural wines.  Grower-producers are required to attend their stall, so you can learn from the best.  And if the best way to learn is by doing, they’ve got you covered.  There will be upwards of 200 of these unique wines available to taste (good luck).  This year sees an increased focus on natural farming, with wines shown only produced from naturally-farmed vineyards.  Swoon.

What’s happening:  This year sees an exciting series of talks by producers, chefs, educators, writers, sommeliers and more, which will cover a diverse range of topics around food, wine and agriculture.  School is in session ya’ll.  As you make the rounds you’ll find music, food stalls, more wine, and a bottle shop.  And of course, the night parties which will consist of… much the same thing.  We like consistency.

Lest we forget the bars.  This year you can pony up at:

  1. Orange Wine Bar: Infamous for skin contact white wines.
  2. Sake Bar: Featuring the best selection of natural- you guessed it- sake.
  3. Wild Fermented & Craft Beers: With stunning wild fermented grain beverages and rare and local craft malt beers.
  4. Spritzstock Bar: Where you can expect the best gin & tonic, spritz and bitters & sodas made with incredible organic spirits.

But the general to-do’s will be:

  1. Eat.
  2. Drink.
  3. Repeat (not necessarily in that order).

What you’ll do: Everything sounding rather palatable?  Bring your drinking shoes, your thinking cap, a healthy appetite and a can-do attitude.

So in summation, this is basically the Holy Grail of sustainable food and drinks.   Cheers to that.
