The Kind Tribe Q&A’s with Adrien Castañeda

The Kind Tribe is hanging with Personal Trainer, model and artist Adrien Castañeda.

IT’S PRETTY RARE TO come across someone as talented, genuine and multi-faceted as Adrien.  He may very well be the real life version of The Most Interesting Man Alive.

In our latest Q&A we’re catching up with super hero, secret handshake creator and friend of the Tribe Adrien Castañeda.  Hailing from France, Adrien is currently kicking it in Australia.  And as for what he’s about…  Well, where to begin?  Here’s a few things you should know: He’s a Personal Trainer.  He’s a model.  He’s an artist.  He’s a musician.  He’s a wanderer.  He’s all of the above.  And then some.  Adrien describes himself as a “movement enthusiast.”  We might go out on a limb here and broaden that proclamation to life enthusiast.  He’s got a disarming smile, an engaging and affable presence and a certain je ne sais quoi (we mustered all of our French speaking skills for that one) that is entirely his own.

All of this is to say that we were pretty excited to chat with Adrien.  But how do you pick a just a few questions to ask someone who is passionate about such a wide range of pursuits?  Well, it turns out we couldn’t really.  And we’re totally cool with that.  You’ll see what we mean in the interview below.  There’s a treasure trove of advice and insights ranging on topics from habits that have changed his life, to top recommendations on exercise and his spirit animal (Duh!  Hint: it’s more than one…).  Ok, there’s a lot of ground to cover here, Tribe.  Read on to check out Adrien’s answers to our Q&A.

I would love to give a hug to: My mom. I miss her everyday. I’ve been in Australia for 4 years and only went back to France 3 times for short visits. I would hug my family and friends.  I wish I could have hugged my auntie one more time before she lost her battle against cancer last year.

My favorite way to unwind is: When I really need to disconnect and relax, I need to be surrounded by Nature. I need to be at the beach when no one is there, or on a cliff… but preferably when the sun sets or rises. I find it becomes a very intense, unique and personal moment.  I love to go somewhere and explore, climb trees and rocks.

My typical training routine looks like: …A kid having fun and fucking around with a very demanding discipline: Gymnastics. I usually go with what I feel on the day, which most of the time results in handstands, muscle ups, front/back lever, flow and movement training. I love climbing too. I often go to 9 Degrees bouldering gym in Mascot.

My favorite hobby outside my profession: I’ve been making music since I was 16, mostly Hip-Hop and New Retro Wave.  I taught myself how to play piano years ago and just started guitar (I suck at it)… so yeah, a lot of that.

And I’ve always been drawing and painting since I was a kid.  I just sketch or draw a lot. I actually drew all my tattoos, it makes it more personal.

Something people might not know about me is: I talk to myself a lot.  I don’t have a sense of smell, but in compensation I can see through walls and transform forks into knives.

My autobiography would be called: The Daydreamer

I get my creative juices flowing by: I usually get creative at night, and it can go until the next morning.  Or when it rains.  I just need to be in the mood for it, be on my own and catch the flow before it goes away.

I find inspiration from:  My feelings on the moment, dreams, museums, conversations and music.

The best advice I’ve been told:
“Where you think it is, it ain’t.” – Ida Rolf
“Street numbers start up from the city centers.”  Sounds silly, but it helped me a lot while travelling on my own.

To me kindness is: A very generic term that is also very personal for everyone.  For me, right now, it means: Making the effort to understand someone instead of judging.  You judge when you don’t understand…

My top 3 exercises for anyone trying to improve their health and fitness:
1. Hanging variations on Olympics rings (or pull-up bar)… actually anything to do with rings is absolute wonder for your upper body strength, stability and mobility.

2. Deadlift is the absolute best compound exercise ever as it requires both anterior and posterior chain to work simultaneously, and it’s a very functional movement that we encounter on a daily basis… we were design to lift stuff.

3. Bodyweight squats… I say bodyweight first because before thinking of pushing up the weights, remember that squatting is our natural resting and pooping position.  Yet a lot of people have lost this ability to perform a proper deep squat and want to lift heavy shit on a dysfunctional range of motion… I call it useless.

4. I had to add a bonus… Don’t forget to move in all planes of motion and explore new movements.

My definition of personal freedom is: Finding out who you are as a human, what drives you and what lights your fire.  No matter what it is, once you’ve found it, make it grow and be it… Which I think is the purpose of our lives… not paying bills (unless you love doing that).  It might take a few years or decades to truly know, or, you just always knew.  I’m currently (actually always been…) in that stage of trying to find out.  The Eternal Quest.  I recently understood the importance of listening to my second brain aka my guts, and also my heart.  Your body speaks for yourself.  But it’s not always easy to listen cause we were formatted to do otherwise; we were taught how to hear it.

So bottom line: Personal freedom = being in tune with your inner self.

Someone I admire would be: My Mom.  Always.  Forever.  When I was a kid, she worked 3 jobs in a week, slept on the couch for 10 years so I could have a room.  She never lies to herself and always sticks to her values and talents.  She’s an artist.  She’s my hero.

I also look up to a lot of people who feed my interest, creativity and personal growth like: Leonardo DaVinci, Wim Hof, Ido Portal, Alan Peacock, Michael Jordan/Jackson/Stevens, Ludovico Einaudi, Jacques Brel, Eminem, my close friends…and Batman.

A habit that has completely changed my life:  Coming to realization of people’s vibrations and my own.  Your thoughts design your life.

A quote or mantra that motivates me: Fluctuat Nec Mergitur.  Which is actually tattooed on my forearm and means: The ship is tossed by the waves but never sinks… So never give up.

My next travel destination is: California, France, Colombia, Philippines, Tasmania and Bora Bora… everywhere.

Something I’m learning or would like to learn:
More, more and more about the human body
Law of attraction
How to survive in the wild

My dream is: I can’t just have one, cause all I do is dream 24/7.  When I was younger, my dream was to play in the NBA.  I played national level in France for 5 years until I got injured.  I’ve always wanted to be an entertainer, successful artist, actor, perform on stage with my music, inspire people, teach them something, make them feel emotions.

I also have a dream to travel around the world and live in a van that I’d convert into a comfy, tiny home… Or I’d love to live in a tree house with a lot of space around to play and grow plants.  But my main dream is to share a passionate relationship with my future wife and be a dad.  I want to be the greatest dad ever.

My biggest fear: Cockroaches, dying alone, losing the people I love

My spirit animal:
Tarzan would be the most realistic, but if you want animals, it’ll have to be a mix of a few:
Lion for its dominance, power, sexiness and the roaring
Monkey, for the agility, hanging strength and playfulness
Rüppell’s Vulture, for the freedom of flying so high (12kms) and being able to see from afar
Wolf for the loyalty, hunting skills.

I’m currently reading:
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
The Kybalion
Where’s Wally by Martin Handford
Anatomy Trains by Thomas Meyers
