This App is Our New Best Bud

There’s a few different plants out there.  Like a few hundred.  A few hundred thousand.  So, understandably we might all want a helping hand keeping track of what’s what.

We don’t want to say it… Don’t make us say it… Ok we’re saying it… There’s an app for that.  This is essentially Shazam for plants and flowers.  Tragically, they didn’t name it Ka-Bloom.  But Pl@ntNet sounds nice too.

This app works for people who have ever seen a flower in their midst, taken a photo of it and then proceeded to wonder not only what it is but how the heck they’d even find out what it is.  This app also works for people who have ever seen a flower in their midst and realised that they know everything about it and would like to share that information with a collective group of  other people.  We’re mostly (completely) in the former camp.  Roughly 86 instances come to mind that involve us lurking in someone’s yard and/or flower bed taking photos of their unknown plant life while thinking I really want this for my budding (boom.) plant collection…

Pl@ntNet works by collecting data from their growing (boom, again.) social network, which uploads photos and information about plants.  Scientists from four research organizations have mixed all these ingredients together and baked up a really useful app.   It features visualisation software that recognises plant species that have been added to the reference base.  Basically as more people join, contribute and participate, the more diverse it will become.

Just like your favourite plant, we want this to take root.  So it’s flower power to the people, ya’ll.
