Something’s Brewing in Marrickville

The secret of alchemy exists to transform mortals from a state of suffering and ignorance to a state of enlightenment and bliss.

– Deepak Chopra

We’re nearly certain a more apt description of coffee could never be found.  So caffeine lovers rejoice, because liquid enlightenment awaits.  And it awaits in Marrickville.  Which should surprise roughly no one at all.

One might inadvertently overlook this long-revered establishment if it wasn’t for the crowd of coffee lovers making their daily pilgrimage.   Sitting nestled amongst industrial sprawl, this hidden jewel is the kind of spartan, urban digs that feel right at home in Marrickville.

It’s as unpretentious as they come, with a low profile, secret club (no official handshake required) sort of atmosphere that rather blatantly proclaims: Exceptional coffee happens here.  The decor is really a combination of “whats the minimum amount of furniture we can put in here” coupled with cream, brown and timber accents.  So the colour palette could probably best be summed up as coffee tones.  Which is fine. It’s a sort of play to your strengths situation.  Honestly, we’d be disappointment by anything else.  These are the kind of things you’ve come to know and well… expect from a place that is serious about their beverages.

And beverages are all you’ll be finding here.  There’s a whopping zero chewables on the menu, so the only thing you’ll be chewing over is which style of coffee you’re ordering.  You’ll have options ranging from daily single origins, a house blend, filter pour-over coffees and cold-drips.  They’ve even crafted a sparkling cold brew known as… the Sparkler.  It’s served in a beer glass (definitely not a bad thing) and reminds us that a sparkling variation of literally anything is slightly more fun.  Mimosas, you’ve had the monopoly on bubbly drinks before noon for long enough.

The coffee runneth over to the front of the cafe, which is where you’ll find the espresso bar sourcing extra-special beans straight from farmers.  It’s the kind of place where you can take a long inhale from your cup and utter things like, “This roast has a warm aroma with rich chocolate notes and a hint of spice on the finish” without anyone raising an eyebrow.

Their motto is: Even great coffee can be better.  Ah yes, wake up and smell the alchemy.
